Alfred K.
Tyll
April 22, 1932 – August 2, 2018
Alfred K. Tyll, 86, of Boynton Beach, formerly of Litchfield, CT and Troy, NY, passed away peacefully at his Lake Ida home on August 2, 2018. Al is survived by his daughter Tracey Tyll Meyer, son-in-law Chris Meyer, grandson Devon Meyer, and granddaughter Kassidy Meyer of Los Gatos, CA, as well as his long-time, loving companion Beverly Melton of West Palm Beach.
Al was proud to have lived a full and happy life and achieved something that only a rare few can claim — to be a world champion athlete. Inducted into the Water Ski Hall of Fame in 1994 and described as the "magician" of trick skiing, he commanded the tricks event in the 1960's, winning four consecutive national championships from 1962 to 1965, adding a couple of Masters titles, and holding seven world records during that decade. Al's passion for water skiing didn't stop there. He did numerous features for magazines including Popular Mechanics, Boys Life, The Water Skier, Boating News, and Fawcett Publications , and he appeared on Sports Spectacular, Wide World of Sports, and other TV shows such as To Tell the Truth and Story of Al Tyll . To give back to the sport that had become such a meaningful part of his life, he lectured regularly, authored two how-to books, started his own water ski school, signed and endorsed trick skis and equipment, and served as president of the Connecticut Water Ski Association after founding the Bantam Lake Ski Club. Correct Craft even manufactured a tournament ski boat with his signature and named it the "Al Tyll Skier."
Prior to becoming a water ski icon, Al launched a rewarding career as a court reporter at age 17 and worked his way up to the Superior Court of Connecticut. From 1964 to 1983, he was married to Christine Baltzer Tyll, a champion water skier herself, an important partner in Al's water skiing endeavors, and the mother of his only child, Tracey. Al's most meaningful lifetime passions, besides water skiing, were tennis, investing, and watching his beloved family grow and thrive.
Al had a tremendous presence and will be missed overall for his positivity, enthusiasm, strength of character, and infectious zest for life. He was an inspiration and a mentor to countless people of all ages.
Friends may call to pay their respects on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 10AM to 12PM at the Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 N.E. 6th Avenue (North Federal Highway), Delray Beach.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Al Tyll Legacy Fund with the USA
Water Ski & Wake Sport Foundation.
