Obituary

Anthony M. DiVeto ("Mickey") of Ocean Ridge, Florida, passed away on March 8, 2023.  Following a seizure, he lost a months-long battle to regain physical strength in health care facilities. The family is deeply saddened and shocked by his death soon after entering hospice.

Mickey was born on February 1, 1937 in Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. Early in life his family moved to Delray Beach. The family moved back to New York, but kept the house in Delray for an additional fifty years. Mickey attended high school in Lindenhurst, New York, but dropped out to join the US Air Force. He got his GED in the service, and by the time he was discharged he had decided that he wanted an education. He worked at night as a printer in Hoboken, New Jersey, and went to college at NYU during the day. He got a student loan that he paid back for years, even after marriage. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from NYU and received a National Science Foundation grant leading to his Master's Degree from the University of South Dakota. After marrying and moving to his beloved Florida, he received an advanced degree in the field
of education called a Specialist's Degree. Cynthia Donlon ("Cyndy") met her future beloved husband Mickey in 1964 while both were teachers at Parkside Junior High in Massapequa, New York. Students who thought they would make a nice couple encouraged them to get to know one another. They married on August 17, 1968, moved to Florida, and began teaching in Palm Beach County. Mickey taught Biology and General Science and was an excellent teacher. He inspired his students, boys AND girls (at the time not so common) to follow lofty ambitions. Several of his students kept in touch with him for many years.

After retirement Mickey had time to enjoy living in beautiful Ocean Ridge, where he lived for more than fifty years. Most days found him walking two miles along the beach and roads in town. Summers were spent on the coast in Maine. He loved the ocean, nature, rocks, plants, and animals. He was a thoughtful, quiet man loyal to his friends.

Mickey was predeceased by his father Anthony C. DiVeto, stepmother Kate (Murphy), mother Charlotte Mulroy, dearest sister Ellen Turner, cousins Tony and Larry Mears, niece Emily Wacker and recently brother-in- law George Wacker.

Mickey is survived by his beloved wife of almost fifty-five years Cyndy, and Turner, Mears, and Wacker families: cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. In addition there are many dear friends.

Turners: Kathleen, Rick Jr., and Annie and their families
Mearses: Carol, Roy, Diane, Nancy, Betty, Dolores, and Tim and their families
Wackers: Judy, Jennifer, Chris, Julia, and Tristan and their families

No words can express how grateful and blessed we are to have neighbors, friends, and certain health care professionals who were there for us and tried to make things better, especially Sue, Gloria, Madie, Carol L., Carol B., Webb, Max, Jean V., Mocilla, Paula, Sherri, and others who offered.

Funeral services will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of condolence be made to Stray No More, an organization founded by Mickey's fellow teachers. It was co-founded in July 1994 in an effort to rescue 50 dogs that were abandoned after Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida.
