Obituary

If you were lucky enough to know Carol Sayers Vockel,
then you were lucky enough!

Carol was born in Harrisburg PA on December 21, 1928 and passed away on December 9, 2017 just shy of her 89th birthday. She and her younger brother, Edwin Mitchell Sayers, Jr. of Sarasota FL were born to Eleanor Eby and Edwin Mitchell Sayers. Carol is predeceased by her husband, Stewart Meldred Vockel, Jr. and her son, John Eby Vockel.

Carol was a 1946 graduate of the Masters School of Dobbs Ferry NY. After graduation she attended Bradford Junior College in NY. She married Stewart "Bud" Vockel, USMA graduate, in 1947. After six years in the military, Carol and Bud and their five children settled in Pittsburgh PA. Carol enjoyed numerous volunteer activities including Vice President of the Junior League of Pittsburgh, President of Mt. Lebanon PTA, Carnegie Mellon Museum docent, and finally found her true passion giving over 35 years of her time and talents to Family Hospice & Palliative Care.

Carol and Bud loved traveling together, skiing, playing tennis, and spending time with friends and family. Carol is survived by her son, Stewart III, and his wife, Pamela; daughter, Margaret Vockel Harris, and her husband, Steve; son, James Sayers Vockel, and his wife, Jeanne; daughter, Sarah Vockel Poling, and her husband, Greg; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Carol's life will take place at Harbour's Edge, Delray Beach FL on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00AM. Also, on Saturday, April 14, 2018 friends and family will gather in Pittsburgh PA in remembrance of Carol and her wonderful life of service to others. Interment will take place at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Fall of 2018.
