Obituary

Catherine "Kate" Coyle Toomey of Boynton Beach, FL passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous six-year battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 81.

Kate is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Edward "Ted" W. Toomey, and their three children: Catherine T. Kelliher (Brian) of Takoma Park, MD, and their children Lucy and Carter; Edward W. Toomey, Jr. (Michele) of Boca Raton, FL; and Mary Glynn Cullinan (Thomas) of Boynton Beach, FL, and their children Tucker, Charlie, and Bridgette. She is also survived by her brother William Crowley (Maureen) of Osterville, MA, and sister Mary Anna Carberry (John) of Wellesley, MA.

She is predeceased by her parents William G. and Catherine B. Crowley and her beloved grandson Nathaniel Kelliher.

Kate was a proud alumna of Ursuline Academy and Elizabeth Seton/Iona College. She married Ted on October 14, 1967, in Norwood, MA. In June 1973, they moved to Boca Raton, FL to pursue Ted's new business opportunity, bringing along their two young children, Kate and Teddy. With her outgoing personality and gift for making close connections with others, Kate quickly found herself surrounded by many dear friends as she embraced her role as a full-time mother and community volunteer.

Kate became an integral part of the Boca Raton community and social scene, serving as the president of several local organizations, including The Junior League of Boca Raton, The Boca Raton Historical Society, St. Andrew's School Parents Association, and the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club Women's Golf Association. Kate was passionate about community building and historic preservation, always giving back with great heart and dedication. And with her impeccable taste and flair, she chaired numerous beautiful fundraising events and filled them with music, flowers, and of course, the perfect table setting.

Although she made Florida her home, Kate remained a Boston girl at heart and was loyal to her New England roots. In 1979, after her third child, Mary Glynn, was born, she and Ted built their dream summer home in Centerville, MA. Each June, they packed up the kids and a station wagon and made their way north to spend the summer on Cape Cod–a cherished tradition.  She spent many a summer beach day at the Craigville Beach Association, sitting and chatting with lifelong friends and family, watching her children and grandchildren swim to the rafts, build sandcastles, and devour grilled cheese sandwiches and frappes.

An avid sports enthusiast with a competitive spirit, Kate loved both golf and tennis. Over the years, she played regularly at Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, Hyannisport Club, Ocean Reef Club, and Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club. She especially enjoyed golf trips to Ireland and across the U.S. with dear friends.

Always up for an adventure, she also adored cruising the world with her beloved husband, travelling to Alaska, Italy, Russia, Croatia, and Turkey in her later years, and again, making new friends along the way.

Kate was a vibrant, generous, and fun-loving person. She brought the same warmth and grace to everyone she met–from her friends at the nail salon to her best friends from high school. Kate was always surrounded by people who loved her dearly and wanted to be in her presence. She brought a zest for life, often singing, dancing, and laughing late into the evening. Perhaps her most extraordinary act of kindness and generosity was when Kate became a living kidney donor to her college roommate's daughter in 2005. The transplant was a successful one and cemented a lifelong bond between them.

In addition to Parkinson's, Kate faced breast cancer in 2012 and was extremely grateful for the treatment and care she received at the Lynn Cancer Institute.

We would like to thank Ability Nursing Services who have supplied Kate's aides over the past few years as she grew increasingly weak from the effects of Parkinson's. Michelle, April, and Janeth have been a constant source of comfort and care, treating Kate with patience and dignity.  We are forever grateful for their love and support.

And thank you to Trustbridge Hospice Care for caring for Kate in the final weeks. Their compassion, care, and guidance have been invaluable to our family.

Above all, Kate was the ultimate mother—steadfast in her love, faith, and dedication to her children's growth and experiences. She was a person of devout faith and found comfort in weekly Mass, novenas, the rosary, and prayer. May the beautiful and rich life she led inspire others to live theirs to the fullest with grace, generosity, and joy.
