Obituary

Cornelius Francis (Neil) Scanlon was born in New York City on May 25, 1934 to immigrants from County Cork, Ireland.  Because of his heritage, Neil was a proud Irish-American and an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

Like many children who grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, Neil quietly shouldered life's burdens without lamentation or self-promotion.  His childhood essentially ended at the age of 10 when his mother died and Neil assumed her responsibilities for running the household and raising his younger brother and sister.

After finishing high school, Neil entered the U.S. Army and served his country in Berlin at the height of the Cold War.  He remained fascinated by Berlin and Germany for the rest of his life.

After returning to the United States, Neil married his sweetheart Ann Marie Tiernan in 1960 and remained devoted to her for the rest of his life.

In the following years, Neil and Ann had three sons whom they raised in New Jersey:  Robert, Neil and Philip.  Neil was always a quiet, supportive father who helped his sons find their own special paths in life.

Realizing the increasing importance of a college education, Neil worked his way through night school at Manhattan College, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1965.

After completing his education, Neil pursued a career as comptroller and financial analyst at U.S. Industries and the company which later acquired it, Hanson Industries.  Neil was well regarded and liked by his superiors as well as by his colleagues, who were sorry to see him retire in 1995.

After retiring, Neil and Ann enjoyed traveling the world together.  Unfortunately, tragedy intervened in 1998 when Ann suffered severe injuries in a car accident which paralyzed her from the waist down.  Typical to form, Neil took on the role of Ann's primary caregiver until she passed away in 2012.  Neil sorely felt the loss of his cherished wife for the rest of his life.

After a brief illness, Neil passed away at his home in Delray Beach, Florida on April 12, 2023 in the company of his loved ones.  He is survived by his brother Patrick and wife Kathleen of Manchester NJ; by his sister Eileen; by his brother-in-law Frank Tiernan and his wife Jane; by his son Robert in Florence, Italy; by his son Neil and his wife Laura of Long Valley, NJ; by his son Philip and his wife Kelly of Jensen Beach, FL as well as by his grandchildren Nicole, Jessica, Michael, Jillian and Michael.

Neil will be greatly missed by his family and friends, who wish him life eternal with his beloved Ann.

Graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023 at 9:00am in Lane 1 of the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7 (441), Lake Worth, FL 33449, Telephone: (561) 649 6489.
