Denis F. Mullane, born in Astoria, New York, on August 28, 1930, passed away at his home in the Village of Golf, Florida, on December 27, 2016 at the age of 86. He will always be remembered for his generosity, quick Irish wit, ability to engage a room, and his devotion to God, country and family. He touched the lives of many as a great friend, role model, and mentor. Most of all he was an incredible son, husband, father, and grandfather.
Denis was a gifted athlete at Chaminade High School on Long Island, where he graduated valedictorian of his class. He was the first member of his family to attend college, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1952 and serving the country as an Army Officer. He was a lifelong supporter and fan of the Army teams. Denis engaged in a lifetime of leadership, serving as President and Chairman of the West Point Association of Graduates and was recognized by the Academy with a Distinguished Graduate Award.
In 1956, Denis began a career with the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company as an agent, ultimately serving the people of the "Blue Chip Company" as President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was president of the 64th AMP (Advanced Management Program) at Harvard Business School. Denis was grateful to be awarded the John Newton Russell Memorial Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual in the life insurance and financial planning industry. After retiring from CML, he worked closely with his son, Kevin, at Mullane Enterprises, where he mentored many of his friends from CML, and continued his community service.
A devout Roman Catholic, he served the church at St Vincent Ferrer in Delray Beach, FL on their parish council till his passing, was a past chairman of the parish council at St. Peter Claver Church in West Hartford, CT, and was blessed to be recognized as a Knight of St. Gregory, the highest honor given by the pope to a Catholic lay person.
Denis served on numerous corporate and civic boards, raised large sums of assets for people, causes, and charities that touched his heart and received many honorary degrees and awards. While significant, these accomplishments pale in comparison to how he treated the people that came into his life. He helped all of us see the potential within us. His style of servant leadership, and dedication to those people and causes that were important to him, will be greatly missed.
He is predeceased by his best friend, the love of his life, and wife of 51 years, Kathryn (Mullman) Mullane. He is survived by three children, Gerard (Brenda Winfrey) Mullane of Wayne, PA, Kevin (Linda Wagner) Mullane of Verona, WI and Denise Mullane of Natick, MA, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 14 at 11 a.m. in the church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford, followed by a reception in the church's parish hall. Private interment of his cremains will be in Fairview Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made out to the Mullane Scholarship Fund, West Point Association of Graduates, 698 Mills Road, West Point, NY, 10996.
