DeWitt C. Treder, 87 of Delray Beach, Florida and formerly Nissequogue, NY passed away at home peacefully on May 4th, 2017 surrounded by his family and loved ones. "Opie", as he was lovingly called by his grandkids, was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 24th, 1930 to John and Marie Treder. He married the love of his life, Elinor Weyer on September 15th, 1951. They had an amazing journey together and created a beautiful life raising their three children, Kenneth, Karen and Patricia.
DeWitt was a Suffolk County Police Officer who joined the force when it was first organized in 1960. Thru hard work and his steady leadership capabilities, rose thru the ranks to become the first career officer to be named Police Commissioner of Suffolk County, New York in 1983. He ran the department until his retirement in 1987. He continued his public service as an elected member of the Board of Directors for the Suffolk County Credit Union for 20 years.
DeWitt enjoyed traveling with his wife Elinor, was an avid reader, movie fan, loved cars and spending time with his children and grandkids. DeWitt is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Elinor Treder; son, Kenneth DeWitt Treder; daughter-in-law, Eileen Treder; two daughters, Karen Treder and Patricia Iovelli; son-in-law, Anthony Iovelli; six grandchildren, Matthew DeWitt & April Treder, Megan Treder, Bryce & Christine Iovelli, Devin DeWitt lovelli and his great grandson Mason DeWitt Treder. DeWitt is also survived by his brother, John Treder and his wife Claire of Setauket, NY and his sister Norma and her husband Dr. Edmunde Stewart of Old Field, NY, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM & 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6th Avenue (North Federal Highway), Delray Beach, FL 33483 with a 7:30PM funeral service.
