Doris Meese (nee Pontery) age 85 of Delray Beach, Florida formerly of Jersey City, New Jersey passed away unexpectedly at home on February 13, 2016. Doris was born on October 2, 1930 to the late Ida and Herbert Pontery, M.D. She was a proud graduate of Centenary College, class of 1950, where she continued to be an active alumnus. She recently attended her 65th year class reunion. Following college Doris studied mortuary science prior to starting her family. Doris raised her family in Jersey City including her beloved children, daughter Margaret Meese, R.N. and husband Rod of Boca Raton, FL and son Michael A. Meese, M.D. and wife Michelle of Hackensack, N.J. She was a devoted mother and housewife who was extremely dedicated to her children. Doris instilled in them the purpose of a good education, work ethic and assisting others. As her children matured she became a very successful businesswoman owning and managing various businesses. In the late 1970's Doris relocated to south Florida where she obtained her realtors license. Doris embarked on a second career as a realtor in the Delray Beach, FL area over a span of twenty years. While becoming a full time Florida resident she enjoyed bowling, swimming, traveling and reading. Her hobbies included mahjong, painting, ceramics and baking her famous lasagna and fruit cake during the Christmas season. Doris dedicated her time and services as a volunteer officer for the Women's Junior League. Right until the end she maintained an interest in politics and current events and was never shy to offer an opinion on any given topic. In addition to her love of family and children, Doris possessed a strong passion for pets and animals. She owned and cared for a countless number of horses, dogs and cats over her lifetime. Doris was an avid sports and N.Y. Knicks fan. She attended all of the Knicks home games during their glory and championship seasons. Doris enjoyed a life filled with fond memories of time spent with loyal friends from all walks of life. The last eight years of her life were made especially joyous by the bond she shared with her beloved grandson Michael Daniel Meese. Michael provided her with an endless source of laughter, entertainment, love and affection. She was thrilled watching him grow and develop. Doris was predeceased by her faithful companion Sid Silon (1999). She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
Funeral arrangements are by Lorne and Sons Funeral Home, Delray Beach, FL where the family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 4pm to 6pm. A funeral mass in her honor will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10am at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, 840 George Bush Blvd, Delray Beach, FL. Entombment immediately to follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, 10941 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter
