Doris Asiel Meyer, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Delray Beach, FL on November 5, 2011.
Born in New York City to Nelson I. Asiel and Ethel Rossin Asiel, she was predeceased by her husband,
Blakeman Q. Meyer and by her brother Robert Asiel. Mrs. Meyer was a graduate of the Knox School in
Cooperstown, NY and Finch College in New York City. During World War II, she served as a nurse's aide,
treating hospitalized veterans. Continuing her efforts in public service in the 1950's, she was a regular
volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation. In the 1960's, she worked for New York City Mayor John Lindsay
and became his liaison with the New York State Federation of Republican Women. An avid golfer, she
was a member of the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT and the Little Club in Gulf Stream, FL. She is
survived by her brother E. Nelson Asiel, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Despina Gimbel,
granddaughter Alexandra Gimbel, grandsons David (Amelia) Gimbel and Mark Gimbel (Dede Welles)
and great grandchildren Lucas and Lila Gimbel. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 13,
2011, 2:30PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 33 Gleason Street, Delray Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
made to the City of Delray Beach, Parks and Recreation Department, 100 NW 1st Avenue, Delray Beach,
FL 33444. These memorials will be used for the baseball programs at "Teddy's Field" in Pompey Park.
