Obituary

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Edward John Skiko, loving husband and father, peacefully passed away at his home in Boynton Beach, Florida, surrounded by family and friends. He was born to Edward A. and Alice Skiko on July 13, 1935 in Bronx, New York, along with his departed siblings Marion Alice (Congregation of Sisters of St Agnes) and Peter. Ed was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of more than 60 years, Kathleen Margaret O'Brien Skiko, who passed January 9, 2020. Kathy spent the last year of her life selflessly caring for Ed after his debilitating stroke in January 2019. Ed was also preceded in death by his youngest son, Andrew Vincent, who passed in 1975, and a grandson, Eric Jeffrey, who passed in 2016.

Ed is survived by six loving children - Edward, Chuck (Mercedes), Gerry, Kathleen (Albert Hadener), Matt (Deb) and Roseanne (Chris Duffy); nine adoring grandchildren – Edward, Courtney, Allison, Matthew, Christopher, Elizabeth, Mitchell, Abigail and Charles; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.

Ed was all about integrity, honesty, and maybe most of all, passion. He had the enviable ability to weave humor into everyday life without losing focus. He was intellectually ahead of his time…the self-proclaimed Smartest Man in the World – and he lived up to the title easily! Everything he did, he did 100% and he tried to instill that passion within everyone that knew him, especially his children and grandchildren. He was passionate about his faith, serving as a eucharistic minister; about sports, excelling in his youth at handball, hoops, and baseball. During his middle years tennis was a passion and later in life he loved to play golf with family and friends – chalking up three holes in one!

Ed's career spanned technical, managerial, and executive positions at IBM and General Electric. His last assignment with IBM was Vice President, Office Products Division, and at GE he served as its Corporate Vice President of Information Technology. Ed earned a PhD from Stanford University (he expanded his 1962 thesis when he co-authored the book "Modern Digital Computers" published in 1963), a Master's degree from Syracuse University and a Bachelor's degree from Manhattan College…all in Electrical Engineering. He graduated from Regis High School – a school that transforms Catholic young men through an academically exceptional Jesuit education in a caring community which inspires leadership, generosity, and a lifelong passion for service as Men for Others . Ed continued working with the Regis High School Owls throughout his entire life giving not only financial aid, but also sharing his time, talents, leadership, and most importantly, his passion.

As accomplished as Ed was, his proudest achievement in life was marrying Kathleen and being the best possible husband, father, and grandfather, he could be. Without a doubt, this was his greatest passion, and everyone knew it. Prior to his passing, he wrote a letter to his children that included these lines:

" I can never adequately express how wonderful a ride I had on this earth. My life was far beyond the wildest dreams
of my youth. I was a very lucky man. Obviously, your beautiful mother, my beautiful bride, was the greatest gift.
She served you and me with her every breath. She never asked for anything in return, and she never complained.
She never complained about my shortcomings and never complained about your mischief…The sacrifices your mother
made throughout our life together will never be fully known to any of you…Mother always saw the big picture, the
family picture. You all have your own personal memories and so do I. Simply stated, mother was the greatest person
I ever knew. Her love was all encompassing. As you go through life, she is the role model to be emulated."

Special thanks to the wonderful CNAs at Auracal Senior Homecare who provided invaluable, high quality care for both Ed and Kathy during these challenging last two years. The family is not only sincerely grateful for their patience, friendship, dedication, and professionalism but for the incredible compassion that was continually displayed and their ability to always allow for the utmost dignity to be maintained. They were able to accomplish what we never could have done by ourselves.

We should always ask this of ourselves when thinking of our loved ones who have passed: I hope that at least in your eyes, I have earned and deserved everything you have done for me in my life!

On a more serious note: the Glenlivet distillery in Scotland is devastated by the loss of Ed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to:
