Edward Kelsey Van Horne, Jr., known to family and friends as Ted, passed away in Delray Beach, Florida on August 5, 2026. He was 96.

A long-time resident of Delray Beach, Florida, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet Van Horne; his sister Barbara; his sons Ted (Theresa) and Bill (Saralisa); and his grandchildren, Teddy, Kevin, Katie, William, Alexander, and Charlotte. He was predeceased by his parents Edward and Mildred and his brother Robert.

Ted was a beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He was born in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, IL in 1929 shortly before the Great Depression. His family moved to Scarsdale, New York in 1933. He lived in Rye, New York for most of his life before moving to Delray Beach, Florida.

Growing up in Westchester County, New York, he was baptized and confirmed at the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale, and graduated from the Greenacres Elementary School and Scarsdale High School.

Ted graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, CT in 1951 with a BA in Economics. He received an MBA in Management from New York University in 1964.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy in several active duty and reserve capacities from 1950 to 1959, receiving an honorable discharge and retiring as a Lieutenant.

In 1963 Ted began his long career at Mobil Oil in New York (now ExxonMobil), from which he later retired. Ted rose to become the Manager of Petroleum Loss Control and Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute.

Ted met his wife Janet in 1967 at a Westchester Ski Club dinner in New York City. They were married that same year, and moved to Rye, New York.

He was blessed to enjoy a long and active “retirement,” first in Rye, New York and then in Delray Beach, Florida. Ted was a kind and caring individual, who often had a smile on his face and a gentle word for others. He would see the best in people and wanted to help others and give back to the community. He particularly enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife, grandchildren, and friends. His many hobbies included sailing at the American Yacht Club, playing tennis at the Delray Beach Club, playing bridge, reading widely, and walking Ginger, the family poodle. He was active in the Rye Presbyterian Church as a Deacon and coached his sons’ Little League baseball teams. He enjoyed volunteering with the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach to visit church members in nursing homes, with a special focus on those without any visiting family.
