Born in New York on Feb. 8, 1917, Edythe "Edie" Pulley Smith of Delray Beach, Florida, died on December 27, 2014 at age 97 of natural causes. She was the daughter of Dr. William Pulley of Huntsville, AL and later of New York City, and Edythe "Countess" Hardman Pulley of New York City.
Edie was a survivor. Despite a difficult childhood, she developed lifelong friends and became a career woman in a few fields. In her 20s, she worked in advertising for McCann Erickson, where she also met her future husband, Rollin "Bud" Smith, a talented art director who later became the Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather. After marrying and having a child, Edythe and Bud moved to Darien, Connecticut in 1951 with their 6-month old daughter, Georgiana, where Edythe embraced motherhood and Bud continued excelling in his advertising career.
Following her divorce from Bud in 1964, Edie forged a new career in real estate. She also discovered her talent for transforming imperfect kitchens and bathrooms into desirable selling features of her own homes. As a realtor, she sold properties in Darien and N. Stamford, CT, where she developed a reputation as a trusted, knowledgeable real estate agent. She employed her sense of design to transform homes where she lived in Darien and Stamford, as well as Skidaway Island, GA, enhancing their value for future homeowners.
Edie loved to play sports and to travel. She was a good athlete, who played tennis and golf until late in life. At the Darien Country Club, she gathered a few trophies for golf and she played singles and doubles in tennis wherever she lived. In her 90s, she was a putting champ at Abbey Delray South, the independent living community where she settled in Florida. Woven throughout, were trips to Europe including, London, Portugal and her favorites, France and Italy.
Edie proved to be a powerful force until her death. She amused and startled many with her unpredictable wit, her love for family was rich and she was an avid reader. In addition to talking with Edie by phone regularly, her daughter, Georgiana visited her monthly from Washington, DC and later Reston, VA, reinforcing a deep bond of love and affection. They also shared a sense of humor and a sense of transcending what goes wrong in life. Their spirits were linked.
Edie is survived by her daughter Georgiana and her husband Rick Bloom, who loved Edie as she loved him; her nephew, William Kiger of Milford, PA and his wife Patsy; and her dear friend, Elizabeth Adams, of Delray Beach, FL. Her older sister, Georgiana "Georgie" P. Kiger died in 1995 in Milford, PA.
