Obituary

Elaine Prentice Hapgood, "Ellie," 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Delray Beach, Florida, on October 26, 2012. Ellie, formerly of Greenwich, CT, was predeceased by her husband, Cyrus Hapgood in 2002. Ellie's passions in life were her family and playing golf. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Babicka, of Vero Beach, FL, and her son, John Powers, of Boulder, CO, and grandchildren, Jim Bohart, Bobbi Hapgood, Shelley Babicka, Lauren Zuskin, and Jonathan Babicka, three great grandchildren, and her devoted caregiver, Raija. A private funeral service will be held for the family. A memorial service will be announced when determined.

Ellie was the daughter of Richard Prentice Ettinger. She was a charter board member of her father's philanthropic trust, Educational Foundation of America, founded in 1959. Mr. Ettinger thought that the biggest problem in the world is human overpopulation. In 1959, the world population was 3 billion, and today is over 7 billion. He inspired Ellie to make mitigating human overpopulation as the top cause in her life.

Ellie's personal commitment to addressing human population growth was ignited after attending an International Planned Parenthood Foundation Conference in Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Around 1968, Ellie volunteered to assist General William H. Draper who was the U.S. delegate to the United Nations Population Commission. She has served on the boards of the Population Crisis Committee and the Population Institute. As president of the Educational Foundation of America, Ellie sponsored proposals to support family planning and geriatric care. She has been a long-term supporter to Planned Parenthood.
