Obituary

Elizabeth R. Adams, 100, of Delray Beach, passed away on October 5, 2017. She is survived by two sons, Leslie R. of Davie, FL, Thomas C., of Clinton Corners, NY, two daughters, Martha A. Morano of New York City, NY, Mary Elizabeth Wheelis, of Stamford, CT, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas in 1996.

Elizabeth lived a long, active and accomplished life blessed with a unique combination of qualities which defined her 100 years: endless curiosity, optimism, resourcefulness, faithfulness, entrepreneurialism and love of family.

Born in New York City, she and her brother Leslie would soon find themselves in their early teen years house sitting in California and baking cakes for sale as the depression took its toll on the country. She attended nine schools in 16 years, involving many moves, some of which were needed to ensure the health of their mother and the economics of the times. During this period, she was schooled by Sisters of the Sacred Heart which would have a strong influence on Elizabeth's approach and orientation to the world around her for the many years to come.

In 1941, back in New York City, Elizabeth married Thomas Adams. Soon after, the country prepared for war and husband Tom enrolled. Entrepreneurial by nature, Elizabeth went to work to support the family which included her mother and father. While selling advertising for the phone company, she started a syndicated column called Travel Go Round which was fueled by her curiosity and passion for travel. The column was published by five newspapers. It wasn't long before she was noticed by the Hearst Corporation to create a monthly travel feature for Town & Country Magazine as the magazine's first Director of Travel. A woman ahead of her time, she commuted to New York City, five days a week interspersed by global travel. She would bring these experiences and learnings home to her growing family of five children.

Twenty-five years later in her early 60s when most consider retirement, Elizabeth started her own travel business with her Daughter Martha called E&M Associates . Eventually, Elizabeth moved to Florida but never fully retired, always writing articles and continuing to meet new people and expanding her mind.

Betty made friends around the world. Her family takes great comfort in that her memory lives on in all of them. She will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 9, 2017 9:30AM at St. Lucy Catholic Church 3510 S. Ocean Blvd. (A1A) Highland Beach, FL 33487.
