George E. Schmierer, 93, of Delray Beach and formerly of Mineola, NY passed away on January 26, 2014. George proudly served in the Army Air Corps in WWII from 1942-1945. He was a member of the Delray Beach Elks Lodge 1770 and was the exalted ruler of the Delray Beach Elks in 1992. George co-founded and was board chairman of Chapter 14 of the New York City Transit Retirees of Florida serving from 1989-1999. From 1998-2004, he served as Chairman of the State Board of New York City Transit Retirees of Florida. George remained an active member with the Transit Retirees. He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Marcella) Schmierer and Roger (Kathryn) Schmierer, son in law, Thomas Peterson, grandchildren, Lisa, Lori, Kristine and Jonathan, great grandchildren, Danielle, Jessica, Abigail, Griffin, Brendan and Justin. George was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Helene and daughter, Karen A. Peterson both in 2011. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM with a 6:30PM Elks service at the Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6th Ave. (N. Federal Hwy.) Delray Beach. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 11:00AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 400 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach. Entombment will follow at the Palm Beach Memorial Park, Lantana, FL.
