Obituary

Harrold R."Bus" Chaney, age 94, a resident of Delray Beach, FL and former resident of Ashtabula, OH, died Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Delray Beach Medical Center in Delray Beach, FL. He was born on April 21, 1924 in Hartford City, IN, the first of four sons of the late Joseph A. and Elizabeth Mauck Chaney. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Roberta B. "Bertie" Good Chaney in Greenfield, IN, on August 1, 1948.  His studies at Purdue Univ. were interrupted to serve his beloved Country as a Lieutenant and navigator in the South Pacific during WWII.  Upon completing his service, he received his B.S. in Engineering from Tri-State Univ., now Trine Univ., and continued post-graduate business studies at Washington Univ. and Harvard Univ. He began his business career in Hartford City, Ind., and retired as the Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of Plasticolors, Inc., of Ashtabula, OH.  His professional career included management and sales where his passion for engaging and relating people were integral.  He was most fulfilled when serving his community and church.  It was his honor to serve on many committees and as a Trustee of First United Methodist Church, Ashtabula, OH; President and Chairman of the Board of the Ashtabula Chamber of Commerce; President of Ashtabula Kiwanis; Secretary of the Ashtabula Country Club; member of the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee of the Ashtabula County Medical Center; founding member of the Ashtabula County Marketing Our Schools organization and Chairman of The Composites Institute 43 rd Conference of  The Society of Plastic Industry.  In retirement, he continued being engaged in his community as an associate member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delray Beach, FL; many civic programs of the Delray Chamber of Commerce, and serving as an officer of the Palm Beach Chapter and Governor of District 10 of Gyro International, Inc., a fraternity to foster friendships. Mr. Chaney was an unwavering Christian confident in his love of God, family, Country and friends. His core values enriched his long life with purpose and joy to the very end.  He never met a stranger and touched those around him with humor and compassion.  Throughout his life, he enjoyed fishing, Eucher, travel, the Arts, and entertaining.

Survivors include his son David B. Chaney (wife, Linette Lowe Chaney) of Millersburg, OH; daughter, Joan Chaney Makley (husband, Richard P. Makley) of Hilliard, OH; three grandchildren, Sheri Chaney Jones (husband, Matt Jones), Sara L. Acocks (husband, Patrick Acocks), and Elizabeth Anne Makley; six great-grandchildren, Dexter Jones, Walter Jones, Lauren Acocks, Oliver Jones, Evelyn Jones and Emily Acocks; brothers, Jack Chaney (wife, late Margot Chaney) of Winterhaven, FL, Rex Chaney (wife, Anne Chaney) of Hartford City, IN and sister-in-law, Sue Chaney (husband, late James Chaney). The family extends their sincerest gratitude to the kindness and love of his many friends, including Gwendolyn Drake who welcomed him into a cherished circle of friends and family in his later years.

Celebration of Life and Interment of Mr. Chaney and his wife, Roberta, will be held at The First Presbyterian Church, 34 Gleason Street, Delray Beach, FL 33483 on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 3:00 PM.
