It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing on October 9, 2023 of Harry P. Cain II, 86, of Quail Ridge in Boynton Beach, Florida. Harry and his wife, Maury, joined Quail Ridge in 2001, and those who knew him well will appreciate that he shot 74 on the golf course just two days before he died and was looking forward to a trip to Scotland to finally play the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Harry was born September 26, 1937 to Harry P. Cain and Marjorie Dills in Tacoma, Washington. His family moved east where he attended Georgetown Prep and Vermont Academy. After receiving his BS at Stanford University, his MA at University of Washington, and his PhD in social policy at Brandeis University, Harry's professional career began with fifteen years in government service, starting at National Institutes of Health. He became Assistant Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and rose to Director of the Bureau of Health Planning and Resource Development at the Dept. of Health Education and Welfare. Harry then spent twenty years in the private sector, first as Executive Director of the American Health Planning Association and then in leadership positions at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. He retired as Executive VP in 1999.

In retirement, Harry taught at the College of William and Mary Graduate School of Business and in the adult education program, consulted on health care reform from 2008 to 2013, authored numerous papers on health policy, testified frequently before Congress on those issues, and had served as a professor in the Institute for Advanced Discovery and Innovation at the University of South Florida since 2016. He was a member of the National Academy of Medicine In Washington DC.

Harry's greatest passion, and a central focus of his life, was golf. His amateur tournaments spanned sixty years. From the early 60s, Harry relished competition, participating in everything from club sponsored to city-wide, various state-wide, and some national tournaments. With too many titles to list, we share only that he won his first significant amateur competition, the DC Metro Amateur Championship in 1963, he was named the Society of Seniors Super Grand Master Player of the Year in 2020, he shot a 65 on his 79th birthday, and shot his age or better 1,236 times.

He was a devoted husband and father and leaves behind his loving wife Maury, his children: Maury (Tom), Harry III (Tanya) and Elizabeth (Jim), his grandchildren: Chiara (Alex), Katie, Julia (Joe), Max (Eliza), Hanna, Harry IV, Jimmy, Caroline, and great-grandchildren: Luca and Shyloh. He also leaves behind his devoted sister, Marlyce (Candy) Tingstad (Bob) and three nephews.

A celebration of Harry's life will be held at Quail Ridge Country Club on November 4, 2023 at 2pm. RSVPs to the club's receptionist (561-737-5100 x3337) are encouraged and appreciated.
