Obituary

Herman was called by God to his eternity heritage on June 18, 2026 at age 90. He was born on April 21, 1936 to Herman J. and Hope A (Smith) in Providence, Rhode Island both (predeceased). He was the eldest of 7 children: Leon F. (predeceased) of Winn, Maine; Helen A. Langfield of Littleton, Colorado; Kenneth A. of Vero Beach, Florida; John L. (predeceased) of Dunnellon, Florida; Donna M. of Stuart, Virginia; and Michael V. of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Herman was faithful to his Catholic Heritage, being Baptized at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence. He received Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. This was where he got married to Eunice R. Fratus (predeceased) in Sacred Heart Church, in East Providence RI on August 10, 1957.

Herman and Eunice were commissioned as Lay and Youth Ministers of the Diocese of Providence by Bishop Louis E. Gelineau in June of 1981. They served as Directors of the East Bay Youth Ministry Center in Riverside, RI for over 7 years.

Herm was a graduate of the Class of ’54, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI and attended several reunions. In his teen years, he distinguished himself by being the first RI Civil Air Patrol Cadet to earn the Air Observer Wings. He also served as a Cadet Encampment Commander with the rank of Cadet Cornel.

Herm and Eunice met as a blind date through mutual friends on February 19, 1954. Their romance continued for 71 years. Herm’s prized possessions were photos of the 50th Wedding Anniversary photos Ray L. and Sophie Bishop 1945; Herm J. and Hope A. Bishop 1984; Herman F. and Eunice R. Bishop in 2007 and a Genealogy Heritage that spanned 10 generations to 1500 in Normandy, France.

Herman and Eunice were blessed with 3 children, Wandajune Bishop-Towle and Jonathan of Andover, Massachusetts; Kevin E. of Boynton Beach, Florida; and Mary H. and Jim Roberts of North Providence, RI. They were the proud grandparents of Victoria D. and David Arboneaux of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and great grandparents to Savannah Hope and Silas Beauregard Arboneaux. They were also blessed with 3 step grandchildren, David of Foxboro, MA, Helena and Philip Sonea; additionally 2 great grandchildren Evelyn Gwendolyn Rodica and Parker Christopher Peter Sonea and Andrew Towle of Ottawa, Canada.

Herm was employed in the Sign Industry as a fabricator, Erector also serving as a Business Representative and Job Corps Instructor for 12 years for the Brotherhood of Painters.

Herman and Eunice taught Round Dance Basics for several years in East Providence and held regular sessions for their club The Bishops’ Dancing Pairs. Herm was instrumental in organizing the RI Round Dance Teachers Association and was elected the first president.

Herm was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, having served as a Grand Knight of Council 64 in Putnam, Connecticut and as Faithful Navigator of Monsignor J.C. Mattieu Assembly 114 of Northeast CT. Herm served as a Field Agent of the Knights for 7 years. In Florida he was a member of Fr. Gabriel Council and JFK Assembly 1593 and the Forth Degree Color Corps.

In his retirement Herm worked as a Field Plotter for the 2009 pre Census and as a Field Supervisor for the 2010 Census.

He served his Catholic Community of Our Lady of Lourdes in Melbourne, FL as a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Communion at masses and to the homebound. Herm was the Altar Server Coordinator and worked with the Religious Emblems for Scouting.

He and Eunice avid worshipers at weekday morning mass. Herm was always ready to use his skills to help with any needs of the church and school from light bulbs to creating miniature models of the altar for the children.

They moved to Delray Beach into Assisted Living Community and joined Emmanuel Catholic Church. He got involved with the Knights of Columbus Blessed Mother Council 13338. He experienced the “Walk to Emmaus Retreat” with 40 parishioners. He especially loved the 1st Friday of every month Knight at the Races.

Herman and Eunice found loving helpers to get them to and from once they entered assisted living. Linn Mineo and her husband Joe along with Ellen Jones, always available for their needs in getting around town.

A Catholic Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 11, 2026, 11:00 AM at Emmanuel Catholic Church, 15700 South Military Trail, Delray Beach, Florida 33484. A Celebration of Life will be held at Duffy's Sports Grill, 6545 Boynton Beach Boulevard, Boynton Beach, Florida 33484.

There will also be a Catholic Memorial Mass to be held at Watson's Funeral Home, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside, Rhode Island 02915 on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 11:00 AM. A second Celebration of Life will be held at The Wharf, 215 Water Street, Warren, Rhode Island 02885.
