Obituary

James "Scotty" Cassidy, 87, of Delray Beach, FL, died Saturday, June 29, 2024, after a short illness.  He was James to his parents and siblings.  He was Jim at work at BOAC/British Airways.  He was Scotty to his wife, friends, neighbors, employees & clients.  He was Poppy to his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was Dad to his children.

Whatever name you knew him as, to everyone he was a kind, friendly, gentle, God-loving, family man. He immigrated to the US from Scotland at the age of 14 along his parents and 3 younger siblings. They left a lovely home abroad to settle in Queens, NY - "in a room and a half, for a year and a half" before moving to the Bronx where he lived until he married the love of his life, Marianne Schaner, in 1959.

In 1952, at the age of 16, Jim started working at BOAC in the distribution department and worked his way up the corporate ladder to become District Sales Manager for British Airways in Los Angeles in 1980.  He was president of SKAL Club and fine-tuned his gift of gab being a member of Toastmasters. He left his job at the airlines in 1985 when he moved to Florida and opened up 3 travel agencies: "The Travel Dept.", "Cruise Quarters of Boca Raton", and "1-800-CRUISES". Scotty and Marianne managed these agencies until 1999. He finally packed away his briefcase in 2001 when he officially retired just after 9/11.

Scotty spent his retirement years traveling, as cruising was something he enjoyed very much – especially with family and friends.  Up until his passing, he was involved in the Knights of Columbus at Emmanuel Catholic Church in Delray Beach, FL – the chapter he co-founded and later represented as Grand Knight.  He took his role seriously in the KofC, whether he was coordinating a day-long bus trip to the local casino or fundraising for children with special needs.

Scotty is survived by his loving wife, Marianne; his daughter, Laura Deary (Jon) and son, James Christopher Cassidy (Erin); grandchildren, Kristina DeAnn Deary, James Elliott Cassidy, and Andrew Scott Cassidy; sister Sarah CinqMars (Bob); nieces Andrea and Melanie Marino, AnnMarie Votaw, and Denise Willig; and nephews John Steven Marino and Joseph Howard.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James & Mary Jane, sister Nancy Marino, and brother John Cassidy.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Scotty on Friday, August 9, 2024, 11am at Emmanuel Catholic Church, 15700 S Military Trail, Delray Beach, FL 33484.

In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted by Emmanuel Catholic Church .  Simply note "In Memory of James Cassidy" in the Memo section of the FUND dropdown menu.
