Obituary

James Milton Rowley passed away peacefully on Friday August 23, 2019 at the age of 82 at his home in Quail Ridge Country Club where he resided for 46 years as an original member.  Jim is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis (née Hartleb) of 60 years and three sons.

Jim was born in Erie, PA on October 22, 1936 to his loving parents Milton Harper Rowley (Bub) and Charlotte Yates Rowley.  In Erie, Jim grew up with his brother Richard (Dick) and a warm extended family which included many family and friends at Kahkwa Country Club. For high School, Jim attended Millcreek High School and later The Hill School in Pottsville, PA.  At The Hill School, in addition to being an outstanding student, Jim developed into an accomplished golfer including once recording ten straight "3's".   After the Hill School, Jim followed his father and brother to Stanford University.  At Stanford, Jim graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1958, played on the Golf Team, and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.   Most importantly, he would tell you, Stanford was where he "pinned" his future wife, Phyllis Hartleb, his high school sweet heart from Erie.

After graduation, Jim started his career with Ingersoll Rand in New York. In a few years, his interest in financial markets drove to him to pivot into a career as a Financial Advisor on Wall Street. He and Phyllis ultimately moved to Short Hills, NJ and started their family.  They were members of Essex County Club where Jim was President of the Men's Golf Association.  They would have three beautiful sons and in 1974 relocate to Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach to enjoy better weather and year round golf!  Jim would head what was the Shearson office in Delray Beach on 8 th Street.

Even with Jim's significant professional responsibilities, he somehow managed to never miss his sons' games and tournaments.  Jim was a devoted father who was always there for the sports, academics, life lessons, or a listening ear. He would serve as President of the Palm Beach Junior Golf Association for years and truly had a passion for amateur golf.  On a humorous note, his sons now recognize the demise of their Father's golf game began when he tried to play a Father Son Tournament with all three sons at the same time.

Jim and Phyllis sailed around the world to celebrate their 50 th Wedding Anniversary, fulfilling a life-long dream.  Jim was truly a renaissance man with a love of music, Broadway shows and, in particular, dancing with his beautiful bride. For decades, their Saturday date was dinner and dancing at Quail Ridge Country Club.   Jim was a wonderful listener and had an uncanny ability to perfectly time a friendly barb that would cause the room to break into laughter.  Jim passed away in his favorite chair where he had analyzed the financial markets, told college football coaches what plays they should call, and explained to the PGA Tour pros what shot they should hit.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis (née Hartleb) and his three sons and eight grandchildren.  Jim's oldest son Philip Yates Rowley (Jill) of Charleston, SC and their four children;  Philip Yates Rowley, Jr. of San Francisco, Jackson McBride Rowley of Oakland, Jennifer Jean Rowley of Newport Beach and Lilly Kate Rowley of Charleston.   His middle son, Jay Richard Rowley (Kris) of Boynton Beach and their two children; Nicholas Jay Rowley and Caroline Olivia Rowley both of Boynton Beach.  And his youngest son, David James Rowley (Darlene) of Boynton Beach with their two children;  Charlotte Yates Rowley and John Beebe Rowley both of Boynton Beach.  Jim is also survived by his brother Richard (Dick) Yates Rowley of Toledo, OH. Jim will be forever missed and the closeness he had with his wife, sons, and grandchildren will be his greatest legacy.
