It is with deep sadness that we lost our wonderful Janet Gilchrist on Sunday, May 24th, in Delray Beach Florida. She was born on July 28th 1935 in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up nearby in London. After earning her Bachelor's of Education Degree at Ohio University, she moved to Cincinnati and completed the Masters program at University of Cincinnati. Janet began teaching in the Foresthills School District in 1960, eventually becoming the first female counselor at Anderson High School. While at Anderson, she touched many young lives as Varsity Golf Coach (Coach of the year in 1978) and advisor to the American Field Service, in addition to her counseling responsibilities. After retiring from Anderson, Jan and her husband Charlie moved to Delray Beach so that they could enjoy golf year round and spend time with family. Aside from golf, she spent many hours gardening, serving as President of Lanikai Villas, and in recent years has served as the Director of Volunteer Services at The Women's Circle, a charity to help low income adult women. Janet also had the special pleasure of spending many hours with her eldest granddaughter, Abigail Callinan. She loved to travel, and spend time with her family, entertaining elegantly and effortlessly. Janet was preceded in death by her father, Francis Cunningham, her mother, Iva Steberl, husband(s) James Morrissey and Charles Gilchrist, Jr. and loving daughter Melissa Gilchrist Simpson. She will leave a lasting legacy of love to her dear friend and companion Lawrence Schmidt, brother Paul (Judy) Cunningham, children Andrea (Tim) Ireland, Sarah (Dan) Callinan, Amanda (Richard) Ameter, Charles (Kathie) Gilchrist, Margaret (Jeff) Burns, and sister in law Linda (Richard) Morse, as well as numerous grandkids, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was surrounded with much love as she passed peacefully on Sunday evening. There will be a celebration of her life later this summer, but if you'd like to honor her now, please feel free to donate to The Women's Circle in Boynton Beach Florida or to hospice programs in the area. Thank you to all who were a part of her life.
