Jay Major Callaway, Sr., age 77, surrounded by family and friends, passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2012. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Gloria; three children, Major Callaway, Jr. (Kelly), Michael Callaway (Linda), and Kathy Mann (Dave); and nephew, Joseph VanNess (Christina). He had 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Kathleen in 1978 and Jay P. (PapPaw) Callaway in 2002, and sister, Barbara VanNess in 1998.
Major moved with his family from Detroit to Delray Beach in 1946 and later graduated from Seacrest High School in 1953. His career as a businessman and entrepreneur began in 1959 when he started Lake Worth Septic Tank Service. He founded Callaway Vault Company in 1963 and added a crematory operation eleven years later. In 1984, he established Callaway Concrete, an independent company that provided concrete services in the Palm Beach County area for almost 20 years. He sold the company to Rinker in 2003, giving him an opportunity to enjoy his many personal interests and pursue his life-long love of boating. Last year he fulfilled another dream when he purchased a three-wheeled motorcycle/trike to travel around the state of Florida. He always lived life to the fullest and strived to make the most out of every day.
Major had many friends from all walks of life and always greeted everyone with a smile and a hug. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand to others in need. He will be greatly missed by the family and friends that loved him.
