Obituary

John Pegram Roy, 79, died on May 24, 2021 with his wife Gail by his side after complications from heart surgery.

John was born on February 14, 1942 to Margaret Young Roy and Lamar Douglas Roy, Jr. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Lamar Douglas Roy, III, and his first wife Marion Harcourt Roy.

John graduated from Louisville Country Day School where he played football and basketball. During his high school years he was a member of the Athenaeum Literary Association. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1964 where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

After college he served in the United States Air Force before beginning a career in the insurance brokerage business. He retired in 2009 after many successful years selling insurance and cultivating friendships with his clients, business associates and partners.

John never met a stranger and was always initiating conversations with others. He loved the game of golf, the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Pendennis Club, Louisville Country Club, The Little Club (Gulfstream, Florida) and The Ocean Club of Florida (Ocean Ridge, Florida).

He is survived by his wife Gail Burkart Roy, son John P. (Jay) Roy, Jr. (Liz), daughters Margaret Cooper Rockwell (Rocky), Eleanor Roy Robinson (Scott). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren – Katherine Roy Cornett (David), Margaret Roy, Ashton Robinson, Lolley Robinson, Cooper Robinson, Lilen Rockwell and Miles Rockwell.

Visitation will be from 4-7PM on Thursday, June 3rd at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church (6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road, Harrods Creek, KY). A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 4th at 11AM at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church.
