Sloan, Iii
November 20, 1936 – March 25, 2021
John Nicholas "Nick" Sloan III, 84, a lifetime resident of Delray Beach, Florida passed away on March 25, 2021. Nick was born on November 20, 1936 to Annie Rose and J. Nick Sloan, Jr. He attended Delray Beach Elementary School, Seacrest High School, Riverside Military Academy, and the University of Florida. Nick served his country in the United States Army. He enlisted in 1957, was stationed in Germany, completed active duty in 1959, and remained in the reserves until 1963.
Nick was a true native of Delray's Village by the Sea enjoying all of its seaside activities. He had a crew of childhood friends who enjoyed riding bikes and fishing the shores of Delray. It was an easy transition for Nick to spend his summers as a lifeguard at the Boca Raton Hotel.
Nick had deep farming roots through his father and grandfather. From a young age, he worked with his father farming produce west of Delray Beach. Nick relied heavily on his farming roots as he later transitioned to a 30-year career in agricultural research and development. Using his natural talents in mechanics and engineering, Nick traveled the Southeastern United States and Central America introducing and maintaining the latest machinery for packaging produce.
In 1960, Nick married Rose Machek who was also a lifetime resident of Delray. Nick and Rose had three daughters: Susan, Jane, and Kathryn. Nick was never at a loss for friends and enjoyed a lifetime of volunteering in whatever capacity his daughters needed. He was honored to join the ranks of the Lake Ida Neighborhood Dads who assisted the locals as they journeyed from elementary to high school. Family always came first for Nick. Together with Rose, they planned many family trips with a favorite location being the family farm in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Nick was a mechanical and mathematical genius. He drove over 75,000 miles a year for work and always knew where to find the absolute best barbeque in the southeast. He loved Jesus, the Word of God, and a good gospel song. He was an incredible dancer and was always popular at the parties; however, his favorite dance partner was his beautiful bride, Rose. Nick loved John Wayne and all things western, especially his cowboy boots. He collected trains and enjoyed hunting for antiques in the raw finding many treasures over the years. Nick's all-time favorite activity was rocking on the front porch in the mountains with Rose at "The Little House" they built in NC.
Nick is survived by his wife of 61 years; his daughters Susan Wittig; Jane Current (Clark), and Kathryn Anderson (Wayne); his four grandchildren; and one precious great granddaughter. He also leaves a sister, Ashlyn Sloan Bethel, four beloved nieces and many special cousins. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne "Tucky" Sloan Samsen.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Nick will be laid to rest at the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens.
