Obituary

Jose Olivella Sr., MD known to his family as "Cuco", his friends as "Joe Senior" and his patients as "Dr. Joe", passed away in his sleep on March 14, 2018 at the age of 93.

Jose was born in Matanzas, Cuba on December 2, 1924.  He was an avid baseball player when younger and fan throughout his life.  He received his medical degree from La Universidad de la Habana and went on to be a respected surgeon in Cuba for many years.  He met the love of his life Marta and married in 1952.  They were married for 65 years and have two children, Jose Jr. and Marta.

In 1959, the family fled Cuba, due to the communist takeover of their beloved country.  The family moved several times throughout the eastern United States, as Jose studied, learned English and ultimately obtained his medical license in the United States.  Jose and family eventually settled in Delray Dunes, a small community in Boynton Beach, Florida.  Jose enjoyed many years as general practitioner and emergency room physician, associated with JFK Hospital.  He received much joy from treating patients in the community.  Upon retirement, he took pleasure in many rounds of golf, watching his beloved Marlins play baseball and had the greatest fulfillment in being with his wife and watching their family grow.  "Cuco" loved his five grandchildren very much and especially loved his four great-grandchildren.

Jose embodied the American Dream.  His life was a testament to courage, strength and love.

Jose is pre-deceased by his brother Miguel.  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Marta; son, Jose Jr. (wife Kathy); daughter, Marta (husband John), his five grandchildren, Cristina (husband Nolan), Angela (husband Mike), Jennifer (husband JP), John (fiancé Alicia) and Allison; four great-grandchildren, Vincent, Douglas, Cooper, Matthew and baby Alvarez who is due in June.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 10:00am at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 643 St Mark Pl, Boynton Beach, FL 33435, followed by entombment at the Boynton Beach Mausoleum.

Due to Cuco's love of our four legged fur babies, memorial donations can be made to the Peggy Adams Rescue League in his memory. Click Here to Donate Online

Rest in peace Cuco.  You will be missed by all who knew and loved you.
