Larry
Leins
February 17, 1927 – January 7, 2020
Larry Leins passed away on January 7, 2020 following a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease. A longtime resident of Rumson, NJ, he was born in New York City on February 17, 1927; the only child of Herman Stephen Leins and Caroline Beers Heffron.
Raised in New Rochelle, NY, Larry attended Admiral Farragut Academy in Toms River, NJ before graduating from Pelham (NY) High School, 1944.
Following graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. When pilot training was suspended following cessation of hostilities he was transferred to the Quartermaster Corps and served in postwar Germany and Italy. Larry then attended the University of Virginia for two years before transferring to Florida Southern University in Lakeland, FL where he was a member of the crew team Theta Delta Chi and earned a degree in English, 1951. Following graduation he began his business career with CBS Television. He later worked in Detroit for International Film Syndicators before returning to New York City to commence a 35 year career in the publishing industry; working with a diverse group of publications including Outdoor Life, Saturday Review, Car & Driver, and Harvard Business Review. Indulging a lifelong passion for automobiles and international auto racing, Larry was a past-president of the Porsche Club of New Jersey, and was "only a vice-president" of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society for many years.
Known for his sense of humor, storytelling and enduring loyalty, he will be dearly missed by his many lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Gretchen and his wife of 53 years, Anne Elizabeth DiCostanzo. He is survived by his son, L. (Loretta) Eric of St. Augustine, FL; sister-in-law, Irene (Robert) Layton of Ocean Ridge, FL and brother-in-law, Michael (Barbara) Costanzo of San Diego, CA.
