Lucy Ann
Ufferman
December 7, 1934 – May 26, 2022
Lucy Ann Ufferman, 87, passed away peacefully in her son Michael's home in Apopka, Florida, and met her Savior face-to-face on May 26, 2022.
Lucy was born a farm girl in Fairborn, Ohio on December 7, 1934 to Yugoslavian immigrants, Thomas and Dora Huzjak. She was the youngest of eight children.
A secretary at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in her earliest working years, Lucy saved her money and bought one of the first cars her farm family ever owned. Not only was she frugal, she was a beauty too, competing in the Air Force Base beauty contest, garnering first runner-up.
This smart farm beauty caught the eye of Harold D. Ufferman, and married him in 1956.
Early in the marriage, the former farm girl learned how to fly an airplane solo. Her flying hobby was brought to a conclusion with the birth of her first son, Michael Francis, in 1957. Harold was also a pilot so the family continued flying high and eventually David Eric was born in 1960.
A couple of years later, Lucy and her husband packed up her home, two kids and Toy Fox Terrier Mitzi, left Ohio farm country, and moved overseas to Puerto Rico. She was a great wife and mom in this new country, and also learned the art of open-ocean motor boating, sailing, and navigating by charts in the waters of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The family moved, mid-1975, briefly to Miami and then to Delray Beach, Florida. Lucy and her husband bought and remodeled a former bar and made it into one of the most popular disco dance lounges in Palm Beach County – "Del's Purple Toadstool Music Lounge". Lucy's husband died unexpectedly the night before the grand opening and suddenly the farm girl was now a night club owner and manager, She succeeded at this for a number of years.
Lucy put the lounge up for sale in 1979. The morning of the closing and final key transfer, she discovered the interior had caught fire the night before. The farm girl went from riches to rags overnight.
Undaunted by the adversity, in January 1980, she landed a job as a legal secretary working with the prestigious Byrd, DeVitt, Otto, and Thistle Law Firm of Delray Beach, where she remained until retirement in January of 2000.
During those 20 years and beyond, she lovingly supported her son, David, through his challenging years after he had an accident on a job site and broke his back, had multiple surgeries, and eventually died in 2017.
On her secretary's salary, she traveled to visit her son Michael during his 21-year Air Force career. That took her to countries like the Republic of Panama and Spain, in addition she traveled to Israel, all while paying off, in just 15 years, the home she lived in for 35 years.
Most importantly, Lucy was introduced to her need for a Savior in 1982. She recognized though she was a "good person" she was still a sinner. At that time, she repented of her sin and asked Christ to be her Savior. This decision was her blessed hope during the final days of her life.
In her work and retirement years, the farm girl lived a humble, simple, quiet life. She served the needs of many of the local elderly community by doing their bookkeeping. She also prepared food for poor and needy "street people" in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, each week volunteering at her church's soup kitchen.
Lucy is survived by her son, Michael Ufferman (Bonnie), and her older sister, Irene Geise. Her grandchildren include: Faith Ufferman, Timothy (Amanda) Ufferman, Kimberly (Charles) Ellis, and Amanda Smith (Joshua).
Initial funeral arrangements and services in Apopka were provided by Loomis Family Funeral Home. Lucy's body was then transported to Delray Beach. Final funeral arrangements and services were provided by Lorne and Sons Funeral Home in Delray Beach.
There will be a brief viewing on Friday, June 10, 2022 between 10 and 11 a.m. at Lorne and Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6 th Ave, Delray Beach, FL 33483. The viewing will be followed by a graveside service in the military section of the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens Municipal Cemetery, 700 SW 8 th Ave, Delray Beach, FL 33446; Lucy will be buried next to Harold, her husband. This is also the same cemetery where her son, David, was buried in 2017
A donation to Lucy's favorite ministry, Zion's Hope, would be an appropriate memorial gift. Zion's Hope provides humanitarian aid in the Middle East via the Servant's Heart program ( https://www.zionshope.org , click on the "Give" tab).
A zoom-style gathering will be held online in a couple of weeks to view the graveside service, share personal photographs and stories, and remember the love Lucy shared with all those whom she knew. If you would like to receive a link to that event, please send your email address to MUfferman@cfl.rr.com . You'll receive a return email as soon as the date and time are firmed up.
