Obituary

Martha Brown Baker of Gulf Stream, FL and Lake Leelanau, MI passed away on January 3, 2019.  She was born on November 13, 1919 in Greenville, OH.  Her parents were Herman L. and Louanna Brown.  Martha graduated from Greenville, OH high school and attended Ohio State University.  She and her husband, Dick Baker, lived in Cleveland for many years before retiring to Florida.

Marty was a recovering alcoholic for nearly 50 years, who worked tirelessly in the field of alcoholism.  She helped start Alcoholism Services of Cleveland (now Recovery Resources) an affiliate of what is now NCADD, The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.  She served on ASC's board for 30 years; during that time she became its President and then Chairman.  In 1978, Marty was elected to the Board of NCADD and subsequently became its first woman President serving for four years.  In 1990, she went on the Board of Wayside House in Delray Beach.  In addition, Marty devoted her life to helping individuals with drinking problems.

Marty was given NCADD's highest award, the "Gold Key Award" for her tireless efforts in the field of alcoholism; "Silver Key Award" for her term as President/ Chairman from Recovery Resources.

She was a member of the Gulf Stream Golf Club and The Little Club.

Mrs. Baker's beloved husband, Richard Thomas Baker preceded her in death in December of 2002.  She is survived by her daughters, Laura Baker (Lewis Lubin) of Annapolis, CA and Jane Baker of San Francisco, CA; and son, Richard T. Baker, Jr. of San Francisco.  She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Anni Baker Wolman in 1999.  Martha is survived by granddaughters, Lily Baker Lubin, Amanda Baker Wolman, and Ruby Renne Madsen Baker and by grandsons Alex Baker Lubin, James Kristian Madsen Baker and Thomas Baker Madsen.

A memorial service and reception will be held for Marty on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach, 33 Gleason Street, Delray Beach, FL 33483.
