Obituary

Maureen Clare Sullivan (née Reddan) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 in Florida with her husband Ray and her four children by her side.

She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and later helped her Irish immigrant parents buy their first home not far from where she grew up.  The house would provide many lasting memories for the family.

Maureen was an excellent student and graduated from Bishop McDonnell High School and St. John's University, the first in her family to receive a college degree.  After college, she worked as a social worker for the City of New York.

Maureen enjoyed traveling and new adventures.  In her twenties, she embarked on a whirlwind tour throughout Europe, including a memorable trip to Ireland, where she spent time with her grandparents.  She lived with a family in Mexico to learn Spanish, and spent summers sharing a beach house with her girlfriends at the Jersey Shore.

Maureen married Raymond Sullivan in 1968 and they were together for half a century.   They spent more than 30 years living in Sloatsburg, NY where she was a dedicated mother, who spent countless hours at the swimming pool, ice rink, and an assortment of fields, proudly cheering on her children playing sports.  The family vacationed in Montauk every summer and traveled to almost every state on the east coast as well as California.  She pursued a degree in nursing and became a registered nurse, caring for patients at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, NY.

Maureen and Ray spent their retired years in Briny Breezes, FL where she enjoyed reading,  sitting on the deck looking out at the ocean, and socializing with her friends. She continued her passion for traveling by participating in Briny's History Club, where she enjoyed many adventures with her husband and friends from the close-knit community. She also had a small part in the movie "In Her Shoes" that was filmed in Briny Breezes.  In recent years, she loved watching her grandchildren swim and play on the beach.

Maureen was an avid reader, lifelong lover of learning and wouldn't miss an episode of Jeopardy or her morning cup of coffee (preferably from Dunkin Donuts).  Maureen was cherished for her love of family, cheerful disposition, optimism and courage during times of adversity, she never complained.

Maureen is survived by her husband Raymond (Ray); four children, daughter Susan Sullivan and her husband Brian, son Danny Sullivan and his wife Rachel, daughter Christine Acunto and her husband John, and son John Sullivan and his wife MaryKate; eight wonderful grandchildren, Kelly, Brooke, Ian, Ryan, Dylan, AJ, Finn and Kiera and a granddaughter arriving next month.  She is predeceased by her sister Eileen Reddan Irvin, and brother James (Jimmy) Reddan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, 10:00 AM at St. Catharine Roman Catholic Church, 905 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ 07452.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, April 30th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM & 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home Inc., 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410.
