Mercedes Quinn of Delray Beach passed away peacefully at her home on November 16, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born on February 26, 1922 in Casablanca, Morocco. Mercedes had three siblings, who have passed before her, Jose, Simon, and Mimi. She came to the United States in 1962 with her family. It was through her sheer determination and tenacity that she secured visas for her and her family to leave Morocco, visiting the visa office daily until they provided her with the documentation they all needed to start a new life here in the United States.
Mercedes spoke five languages, French, Spanish, Arabic, Italian, and English, switching easily depending on to whom she was speaking. Her family in Morocco was large and many of them emigrated at around the same time, spreading her ties across the world.
Once her and her family arrived in the United States, they settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where she worked as a seamstress until she was 70 years old. She would often take on extra work so that she could care for her five children, Alyce, Michou, Daniel, Maurice, and Dorita. This independence and determination remained a hallmark of her entire life. She cooked meals for herself and others, walked to the store for groceries, and checked in on friends and family well into her nineties. She showed her love for everyone in her life with frequent offering of homemade cake, cookies, and treats ("hajitas" and "hajones"), as well as homemade knitted and crocheted hats, scarves, and blankets.
Upon retirement, she moved to Florida and settled in Delray Beach to be close to her brother, Jose, and her daughter, Alyce. She married Fred Quinn in the early 1990s during a trip to Las Vegas. Fred passed away in March 2001. While living in Delray Beach, she enjoyed her friendships she made and the time she spent at the Volen Center, including knitting hats for children at the hospital.
She is survived by 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. (4 children: Alyce [Schnetzer], Daniel, Maurice, and Dorita Cohen); 10 grand children (Alan [Tabasky], Linda [Tabasky], Amy [Cohen], Michael [Cohen], Jennifer [Porter], Michelle [Schuler],Kim [Cohen], Doug [Cohen], Joey [Cohen], and Melissa [Cohen]); 20 great grand children (Mitchel [Tabasky], Rachel [Tabasky], David [Nunez], Scott [Nunez], Andrew [Cohen], Alessandra [Flores], Ayden [Cohen], Bryleigh [Porter], Bristol [Porter], Brennah [Porter], Carsyn [Schuler], Cassidy [Schuler], Logan [Keller], Alexandra [Cohen], Elena [Cohen], Preston [Cohen]; Darcy [Cohen], Candy [Cohen], Ryland [Long], Alexis [Long]); 1 great great grand child (Sophia [Cohen]).
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM with an 11:00AM funeral service conducted by Rabbi Brett Goldstein at the Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, Delray Beach. Interment will follow at the Delray Beach Cemetery.
