Obituary

Michael James Powers of Boynton Beach, Florida, died suddenly on February 17, 2015. He was 63. Born in Freeport, New York, he is preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Dorothy A. Powers. Michael is survived by Mary Johnson Powers -- his beloved and devoted wife of 40 years, his children -- John-Patrick of Washington DC and Katie of Boynton Beach, daughter-in-law Sarah and grandson Parker. He also is survived by his seven sisters and brothers, Maureen Powers Woodroffe (William), Joanne Powers Rowan, John D. Powers (Loretto), Virginia Powers Schmitt (James), Timothy P. Powers (Jeanne), James F. Powers (Alicia), and Daniel G. Powers (Audrey), 18 nieces and nephews, and many close and devoted friends from high school, college, work and every other part of his life. Michael was a proud graduate of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina. He received his MBA from the Hagan School of Business at Iona College, New Rochelle, New York. Michael's work experience included working as a probation officer in Nassau County, New York following his graduation from college and then with IBM, where he worked for some 40 years in a number of roles, including in finance, procurement and contract negotiation. He was also extremely generous with his free time, volunteering at a number of charitable and service organizations, including serving for 10 years on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County. Michael loved debate, willing to share his opinions, always with a smile on his face. He was passionate about many things, including politics, sports, current events and popular culture. More than anything else, Michael loved his family and friends. A man of uncommon kindness and empathy, Michael drew people close to him and to one another, making them feel special and appreciated. He touched many with his openness and easy manner. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 7:00-9:00PM at Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6 th Ave. Delray Beach, FL 33483.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Michael on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 10:00AM at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 10935 South Military Trail, Boynton Beach, FL 33436.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Michael's memory to either the YMCA of Boynton Beach, FL or Habitat for Humanity .
