Obituary

Norma Miller Brown passed away peacefully at her home on July 22 nd , 2021 at age 98.  Norma was born on January 5 th , 1923 at her parent's home in Delray, Florida although her birth certificate officially states January 4 th since the town doctor had already filled out the paperwork and then Norma waited until after midnight to arrive.  Delray was that kind of place back then.

Norma is survived by her nephews, John E. Miller, Jr. (Karen) and Timothy A. Miller, niece Rebecca E. Miller, cousins Joyce Sheppard, Jerry Lang, Steve Friberg, Linda Oxford, Margaret Cannon, John Wuepper and Kathleen Skomp, and stepdaughters Nancy Schoenfeld and Patricia Orchard.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Earl G. Brown in 1999, her brother John Miller in 2008, and her brother Bob Miller in 2017.

Born in a small town in sleepy south Florida did not slow Norma down as she was pushed to start her education a year early so she could accompany her brother, Bob, to school.  She said she struggled to keep up, but those efforts paid off as she entered the banking industry after graduating from Delray Beach High School in 1941 and rose from assistant teller at the First National Bank of Delray Beach to vice-president by 1959.  She was named "The Ideal Businesswoman" in 1957 by a banking trade group where she was selected out of over more than 100 other nominees.  Over the years she received many other awards and accolades for her business acumen and community service.  In addition to her banking career, Norma was one of the founding members of the Delray Beach Historical Society, a talented artist and member of the Delray Art League, active in her church, and enjoyed boating, golf, her dogs, and travel.

Norma married Earl G. Brown in 1972 and with his encouragement she took flying lessons and received her pilot's license. She relished the sense of freedom and accomplishment this provided, and they traveled extensively over the years and enjoyed their life together until Earl's passing in 1999.

Her intelligence, wit, generosity, insight, confidence, and friendship will be greatly missed but she has influenced and inspired so many during her life who have in turn become better people because of her.

A brief graveside service will be held on Friday, July 30 th at 12:30pm at the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens located at 700 SW 8 th Ave., Delray Beach, followed immediately by a memorial celebration reception at the Delray Beach Historical Society located at 3 NE 1 st Street, Delray Beach.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations to the Delray Beach Historical Society , Trinity Lutheran Church of Delray Beach , or Trustbridge Hospice Foundation in her name would be gratefully appreciated.
