Owen S.
Smith
January 3, 1934 – March 6, 2026
Owen Seymour Smith was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He was the fourth of five children born to the late Cleveland and Ivylyn Miranda Smith. He attended Calabar Elementary School, where he met Sybil Richardson. He attended Kingston Technical High School. He was affectionately known as Seymour. He came to know the Lord at an early age and attended East Queen Street Baptist Church with his family, the same church that his future wife, Sybil, and her family attended. He was an avid sports fan of football (soccer), cricket, and the New York Knicks. Seymour immigrated to America in 1954 with his sister, Shirley. He continued to pursue technical training and demonstrated an aptitude for mechanics. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Motor Pool, where military vehicles were maintained and repaired for soldiers to use in combat. It was a unit for specialized mechanics. After his service in the Army ended, he worked for the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) in NYC.
Seymour was loved by his family and extended family. He was family-oriented, a devoted and dutiful son, and highly respected by many. He was a proud and principled man. He came from traditional roots: family dinners, weekends filled with music and a game of dominoes, and holiday gatherings. He was the life of the party and had a sense of humor and charm. He loved to travel abroad and locally. He retired and moved to Florida in 2005 and married Sybil. Seymour developed a closer walk with God and was confirmed and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He looked forward to fellowship with his church family.
Seymour was preceded in death by his siblings, Daphne Domingo, Douglas Smith, M.D., and Sidoney Johnston. His beautiful life came to sunset on March 6, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sybil, her son Robert, sister Shirley Edwards, his beloved nieces, Nicolette D. Brown, Marlene Johnston, and Synthia Edwards Elmore (Larry. Elmore), 3 children, and a host of other family and dear friends.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM with a 10:00 AM funeral Mass at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 188 South Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33444. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:00 PM at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449 in Lane #3.
The family
Perhaps
Perhaps you sent a lovely card or sat quietly in a chair.
Perhaps you sent a funeral spray, if so, we saw you there.
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as many friends could say.
Perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us that day.
Whatever you did to console our hearts, we thank you very much, whatever the part.
Acknowlegements:
The family is deeply grateful for your love and kindness. May God bless and keep you in his care.
