Paul Douglas (Doug) Kelly, 89, passed away on November 20, 2014 in Delray Beach, FL.
Doug was born November 3, 1925 in Peekskill, NY, the son of the late Frank J. Kelly and Aves (Laturner) Kelly. Doug grew up in New Jersey and attended high school in Ridgewood. Doug was an active youth, he lettered in High School Soccer and Track, and was a member of the High School ROTC. As an adult, he was also active and social, enjoying bowling, fishing, golf, and travel.
Doug graduated high school early, and immediately enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. He served on patrol duty aboard the Navy Destroyer USS Niblack in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, during WWII.
After receiving service ribbons, battle stars, and an honorable discharge for his military duty, he attended Michigan State University, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He worked as an assistant manager at Stouffers Restaurant in New York City, before returning to Ridgewood to become general manager of a paint and wallpaper business. Shortly after returning to Ridgewood, Doug met Lois Shoudy and a year later they were married on June 19, 1954 in Ridgewood, NJ.
During their 59 years of marriage, Doug and Lois initially resided in New Jersey for 15 years before relocating to Florida. During this time they were blessed with three children: William Kelly (Christine Kelly) of Jacksonville, FL, the late Susan (Kelly) Morman (Tim Morman) of Sedalia, CO, and Linda (Kelly) Flood (Jay Flood) of Boynton Beach, FL. Lois passed away on December 31, 2013.
He is survived by one of his sisters, Carolyn Kelly Hover, two of his children, Linda and William, six grandchildren, Nicole Morman, Tyler and Brandon Flood, Meghan Kelly Martinez, David and Anna Kelly and two great grandchildren, Benjamin and Lilly Martinez.
Shortly after their marriage, Doug and Lois opened and successfully managed an independent paint and art supply store in Oakland, NJ. In 1970 they sold the family business and the family moved to Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida, where they opened and successfully operated a bookkeeping service for small business clientele. After several years, they both secured their real estate licenses and soon afterward, opened Delray Realty in Delray Beach, FL. As a licensed Broker, Doug specialized in residential real estate. Doug was a past member of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce in Ridgewood, NJ, and a long-time member of the Elks Lodge in Delray.
Throughout his adult life, Doug was a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, and a friend to many.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday November 24, 2014 10:30AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, 840 George Bush Blvd. Delray Beach, FL. Burial will follow at the South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL.
