Phyllis Hazard Hammett, 91, of Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. Phyllis grew up in Teaneck, NJ, later moved to Chadds Ford, PA, and Sparta, NJ, but was lured down to sunny South Florida in 1960. Starting in 1990 she summered in Waterford, ME.
Phyllis was a founding board member of the Delray Beach Community Child Care Center; a member and past President of the League of Women Voters of South Palm Beach County; member of the Florida Atlantic University exploratory founding committee; active in civic affairs in Delray Beach, serving on Delray Beach Beautification Committee, member and chairman of Delray Beach Planning & Zoning Board; founding member of the Delray Beach Housing Authority; active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Delray Beach, serving in the choir, Episcopal Churchwomen and on Vestry; member of Seacrest American University Women; past officer and board member, Morikami Inc. (Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens); past board member, Delray Beach Historical Society; board member and officer, Duncan Conference Center of Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida; past board member, Delray Dunes Golf & Country Club; board member, Delray Dunes Garden Club; active member of the Delray Beach Roundtable Book Club; active volunteer at the Waterford Library, Waterford, ME, and McLaughlin Garden & Homestead, South Paris, ME.
Phyllis is survived by her brother Roger Hazard and his wife Betty of Clermont, FL; daughter Debbie Thatcher and her husband David of Boynton Beach, FL; and daughter Susan Plume of Franklin, MA; step-children Doss Hasson and her husband Jonathan of Cheshire, CT; Meg Pierce and her husband Jeffrey of Weston, MA; Suzanne Muth and her husband Greg of New York City; Dr. A. L. (Tom) Hammett III and his wife Lisa of Blacksburg, VA; and 11 grandchildren; niece Lynne Prestage of Richmond, VA; and nephew Tom Hazard of Brielle, NJ. Phyllis was pre-deceased by husband Clarence A. Plume in 1987 and husband Alfred Lawton Hammett II in 1996.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 9:30AM on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Delray Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach FL 33444. LORNE AND SONS FUNERAL HOME in charge of arrangements.
