Obituary

Rev. Raymond P. Hubert, born June 16, 1933 in Woonsocket RI, son of the late Louis P. Hubert, Sr. and Aurore (Belhumeur) Hubert, attended St. Joseph Parochial Elementary School in Woonsocket, RI.  He entered LaSalette Minor Seminary in Enfield NH in September 1946 and LaSalette Major Seminary in Attleboro MA in September 1952.  He was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 1958 in New Bedford MA.  He volunteered for missionary work in the Philippines where he arrived in October 1958.  In January 1959 he was appointed pastor of San Isidro Church in Aurora Isabela in the Diocese of Tuguegarao.  Except for two six month visits to the United States, he held that position until his return to the U.S. in November 1973.  While pastor at Aurora, Fr. Hubert was also Rector of the local catholic high school with an enrollment of over 700 students.  He also served as diocesan spiritual advisor to the Cursillo Movement.

In January 1975, after studies at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans LA, Fr. Hubert became the first chaplain of the Woonsocket Hospital in his native Woonsocket RI.  In September 1977 he accepted the position as founding Director of the Pastoral Care Department at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach FL.  In that position, he was instrumental in developing the Employee Assistance Program and in establishing the Hanley Hazelden Center for the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction on the campus of St. Mary's Hospital.  In May 1986, he was certified as a Chaplain Supervisor by the United States Catholic Conference and initiated a training program modeled on the CPE Programs for certifying Hospital Chaplains.  As adjunct professor at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach, he provided instructions and supervised experiences to seminarians helping them prepare for their future ministry to the sick.

In 1984 Bishop Daly appointed him Diocesan Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, a position he held until July 2005.  A Charter member of two Councils of the Knights of Columbus, he also served as Council Chaplain for several Councils and Friar for the Loyola Assembly of the Palm Beaches from its inception until his death.  In July 1986, after being appointed Diocesan Director of the Permanent Diaconate, he resigned from St. Mary's Hospital and became Associate to the Pastor at St. Martin de Porres parish in Jensen Beach.  In June 1988, he was appointed Administrator of Emmanuel Catholic Church in Delray Beach and became its Pastor in January 1989.

Fr. Hubert retired from full time ministry in July 1998.  At the request of Fr. Fiore who succeeded him as Pastor, he continued to serve Emmanuel Parish as weekend assistant for several months.  He then started to serve as weekend assistant to Father Clem Hammerschmitt at St. Matthew Parish in Lake Worth.  Spending summers in Boone, North Carolina, he served as Summer Pastor at the Church of the Epiphany in Blowing Rock NC for two years.  He accepted weekend ministry at Boone and Blowing Rock and occasionally at area parishes and mission churches.

Survivors are:  one brother, Louis P. Hubert, Jr., of Woonsocket RI; two sisters, Sr. Yvette Hubert, FMM, of Providence RI and Lucille O. Swinney, of Boynton Beach.  He is also survived by eight nephews and nieces and several grandnephews and grandnieces.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Saint Matthews Catholic Church, 6090 Hypoluxo Road, Lake Worth, FL 33463.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Saint Matthews Catholic Church followed by burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, 10941 Southern Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33411.
