Raymond John
Sullivan
November 20, 1936 – March 18, 2023
Raymond John Sullivan passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 18th at home, the day after St. Patrick's Day, fittingly considering his heritage and love of Ireland and all things Irish.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 20th, 1936 to Irish immigrants, John and Katherine Sullivan. In high school, he was a star basketball player and joined the Army after graduation. He was stationed in France and Germany, where he played football for the Army.
Ray had a deep, joyous laugh that could fill a room, and loved telling the same stories over and over, laughing throughout as if it was the first time being told. Most of all, he was a people person and could strike up a conversation with almost anyone. He had countless one-liners, and his favorite was when he got out of the ocean, "Let's get out of these wet clothes, and into a dry martini!"
Ray married Maureen Reddan in 1968 and they were together for half a century, before Maureen passed in 2019. They spent more than 30 years living in Sloatsburg, NY where they raised four children, and a beloved dog, Clancy. Ray enjoyed watching his kids play in all of their sports, ice hockey being his favorite. Every summer, the family spent two weeks in Montauk. They also traveled to almost every state on the east coast, Disney World multiple times and a once in a lifetime trip to California.
He was a proud member of the NYPD for more than 20 years during the Westies Era, and retired as a Sergeant. Later, he worked at the Rockland County Sheriff's Department in New City, NY.
Ray and Maureen spent their retired years in Briny Breezes, FL where he enjoyed playing tennis, sitting on the ocean view deck, and happy hour with friends. He loved to sing and entertain, and was in Briny's Curtain Raiser Club, performing for friends and the tight-knit community. He was a huge history buff and Gettysburg expert, and participated in Briny's History Club, and Travel club where he enjoyed many adventures with his wife.
Ray was particular proud of his small part in the 2005 movie "In Her Shoes" that was filmed in Briny Breezes. He almost missed the filming due to being in the hospital, but can be seen driving a golf cart smiling at actress Cameron Diaz, and even ad-libbed a line that made it into the movie. He was proud to tell all.
As a true Irishman, he loved Notre Dame Football which was must watch TV, and saw the Irish play in South Bend and Dublin, Ireland, thanks to his wife's connections. Ray loved the Brooklyn Dodgers. He enjoyed reading and watching classic movies, "It's a Wonderful Life" was at the top of his list.
Ray is survived by four children, daughter Susan Sullivan and her husband Brian, son Danny Sullivan and his wife Rachel, daughter Christine Acunto and her husband John, and son John Sullivan and his wife MaryKate; ten wonderful grandchildren, Kelly, Brooke, Ian, Ryan, Dylan, AJ, Finn, Kiera, Erin and Colleen; his sister Rosemary; sister in-law Mary; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Maureen, brothers Neil and John.
A celebration of life will be on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Briny Breezes Ocean Clubhouse, 5000 North ocean Blvd , Briny breezes, FL 33435, for family and friends from 4:00-7:00 pm .
