Simone
Lafosse-Marin
March 12, 1924 – July 23, 2024
Simone Lafosse Marin, born on March 12, 1924, in Lamentin, Martinique, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2024, at the age of 100. Simone was the epitome of grace and class, loved and respected by all who knew her. Always well-dressed and proper, she claimed her secret to a long life was all the vitamins she took daily.
Simone's refined tastes were evident in her nightly ritual of enjoying a port with an ice cube and a spoon, and she never skipped dessert, savoring every sweet moment, no matter how small. She could play Triominos for hours on end with anyone who would join her, a testament to her sweet, playful spirit.
Simone's legacy lives on through her grandchildren, who cherish fond memories of their time with her. They fondly recall sharing ti-punch (blanc) and how Grannie inspired a love of coffee at a young age with a heavily sugared 'un petit café' each morning in Largo. Her recipes for Grannie breads, crackers, and chaussons, along with the blankets she made, will live on as treasures passed down through generations.
A master of many talents, Simone excelled at knitting, crocheting, cooking, and baking. She crafted all her daughters' childhood clothing, along with warm blankets, baby booties, and even wedding dresses for her family members. Her creations will remain in the family as cherished heirlooms that carry her legacy forward.
Simone loved sharing stories about Îlet Petite Martinique, especially about the summer she managed an island full of children alone, corralling all 24 of them in at mealtimes with the clanging of a bell. The Largo home was a gathering place filled with love, arts and crafts, holiday festivities, and, always, homemade desserts. She welcomed everyone with open arms and ensured that all had a good time.
Simone's time in Paris during the war and the adventurous trip back to Martinique, watching for U-boats, illustrated her extraordinary resilience and courage. She always instilled in her grandchildren the importance of education, reminding them that it was something that could never be taken away. At home, she insisted French would be spoken, a chore that eventually revealed itself to be a great blessing.
Simone Lafosse Marin also known by her loving family as Mom and Grannie, is survived by two of her children, ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A beacon of love, elegance, and resilience, Simone will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those she touched.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 31, 2024, 10 a.m. at St.Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, 840 George Bush Blvd., Delray Beach, FL 33483 followed by a Celebration of Life reception. Live-streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@st.vincentferrercatholicch2049.
