Sybil Stafford Mead died on January 12, 2012 in Delray Beach, Florida. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 3, 1911. She attended Tudor Hall School in Indianapolis and Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. A longtime resident of Indianapolis, she was a former president of the Indianapolis Garden Club, a past member of the Junior League of Indianapolis, the Dramatic Club, the Woodstock Club, the Leland Country Club, the Country Club of Florida, and the Ocean Club. She enjoyed gardening, golf, and was an avid bridge player.
Since 1921, she had been a summer resident of Leland, Michigan where she met her future husband, John Mead; they were married for 62 years. Last summer, she shared the celebration of her 100th birthday in Leland with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who affectionately refer to her as "Farmor." Beloved and admired by many for her dignity, humor, grace, and loving spirit, she was known for writing thank-you notes in verse.
She is survived by her three children, Franklin B. Mead (Penny) of Boston, MA, William John Mead (Susanah) of Indianapolis, IN, and Edith Mead Holway of Boston, MA, as well as five of her six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place in early summer in Leland, Michigan. However, the family will gather in Indianapolis on Saturday January 21st and invite friends to join them from 3:30-5 pm at the home of Susie and Jack Mead, Conrad Residences. Charitable contributions may be sent to the Indianapolis Garden Club, the Leland Library, or the Fishtown Preservation Society in Leland.
