Obituary

Thomas F. "Doc" Carney, father, grandfather, physician, banker, businessman, humanitarian, philanthropist, and friend died peacefully at home on January 17, 2017 at the age of 90. He was the epitome of Irish spirit: a talented singer, great story teller and formidable wit, a hugely charismatic figure, larger than life, loyal and generous to a fault. He was an avid reader and lover of history. Dr. Carney was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Boston College (where he played football), completing his studies with a medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He moved to Miami in 1954 with his beloved wife, Alice (who predeceased him in 2005), where he opened his medical practice. Retiring from the active practice of medicine in 1969, Dr. Carney pursued a business career. He was a founder of County National Bank of South Florida, Carney Bank of Broward and Palm Beach, and Gibraltar Savings and Loan. He founded Pensacola Greyhound Park, Seabrook Greyhound Park, and, with his partners, acquired Rockingham Park in Salem,NH. In 1968, with Larry Shields, he purchased the Minnesota Muskies, an American Basketball Association (ABA) franchise, and relocated the team to Miami with the name "Miami Floridians", and became President of the franchise and served on the board of the ABA. Dr. Carney was renowned for his generosity and volunteer involvement with a number of groups. He was a founder and Board member of Nova Southeastern University's Health Sciences Division; Chairman and Founding Member, Dade County Water and Sewer Board; Member of the President's Council of Boston College; Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Biscayne College (now St. Thomas University); served as a U.S. Department of State Delegate to the International Conference on the Pollution of the Seas, London, 1971; Member of Board, Villa Maria Nursing Home, North Miami, FL; and was a Board Member of the Patrons Committee of the Vatican Museum. He was presented with the "Keys to City" of North Miami Beach and "Keys to the
County" by Dade County for his numerous civic involvements. Among other awards, he was named North Miami Beach Jaycees Outstanding Man of the Year in l969; received an Honorary Doctorate from Biscayne College in l972; received the Champion of Higher Independent Education in Florida Award (CHIEF) in 1977; received Sunrisers Community Stars Award in1985, and the St. Thomas University Renaissance Award in 1985. He was a Roman Catholic and was active in many catholic charities, including the Knights of Columbus, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. In 1992, he was honored to receive a papal knighthood from Pope John Paul II, being invested as a Knight of St. Gregory. He established a chair at Boston College Law School, where two of his sons (Tom and Peter) graduated. His son Dan followed him into the medical profession as a physician graduating from Nova Southeastern Medical School. He moved to Delray Beach in 1998. Until the death of his wife, Alice, Dr. Carney enjoyed memberships at the Indian Creek Country Club, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour Club, Bal Harbour, FL, Lanam Club, Andover, MA, St. Andrews Club, Gulf Stream, FL and the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Dr. Carney and his wife, Alice, had 3 sons: Thomas (Lucie), Daniel (Christine), and Peter (Carolina), 9 grandchildren: Daniel, Michael, Alice, Caitlin, Thomas III, Brian, Byers, Bing, and Barrett, and a great grandchild (Oliver). Surviving him also are his sister Joan, his brother Daniel (Rose) of New England and many nieces and nephews, all much loved by him. Dr. Carney was predeceased by his brothers Joe and Hugh, and his sister Mary.

Friends may call on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6 Ave. (N Fed Hwy), Delray Beach. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 27, 2017, 10AM at St Thomas More Catholic Church, 10935 S. Military Trail, Boynton Beach, FL 33436. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Malta Projects of Southeastern Florida, Inc. or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
