Obituary

Thomas Joseph (TJ) Murphy-loving husband and friend to many-passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2022. He was 83.
Immediately upon graduation from Boston University, Tom reported to NAS Pensacola where he entered Navy Flight training. He qualified for carrier landings in 1961 and became an official Naval Aviator in 1962. From his squadron in New Brunswick, Maine, he flew in a submarine search  squadron aboard a P2V, flying just 600 feet above the water for 10 hours at a time. His time in the Navy also included stints in the Mediterranean with the USS Antietam and the Cuban Missile Crisis, rotating in and out of Key West and Gitmo. Murph left the Navy in 1965 to pursue a career at American Airlines-achieving the rank of Captain and flying aircraft such as the DC-6, 727 and 767. His time at American also included leadership roles as a check airman and with the union as a base chair and representative.
Upon retiring in 1999, TJ continued his love of teaching, passing on his vast knowledge of flying, boating, navigating and astronomy. He was also an avid reader, storyteller, jokester and traveler. Often seen aboard his boat, Rapparree, he made friends wherever he went and had a joke or story for any occasion. TJ spent the latter years of his retirement involving himself with groups that supported his love of aviation and its historical preservation.
He is predeceased by his mom and dad, brothers and sister. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, and the many friends who will miss him.
A Post Everlasting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022 at his American Legion Post, Sterling McClellen Post No. 142 at 3 pm, located at 171 SW 2nd Street (American Legion Blvd), Pompano Beach, FL 33062.
