Obituary

On Monday September 24 th 2018, Walter Henry Teninga, loving husband, father and (great)grandfather passed away surrounded by his family at the age of 90.

Walter was born on February 14 th , 1928 in the Roseland area of Chicago, Illinois. He attended school on scholarship for both football, and baseball, and received a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1950. He started school in 1945 and left in 1946 to join the Army. He returned in 1947, and was part of the 1948 Rose bowl .Championship team. He played all 4 years he attended. After graduating, he took a job in Chicago at his father's real estate company, later leaving and joining SS Kresge Company. In 1971 he returned to school and received his MBA from Michigan State University. He was promoted to Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Kmart. He left Kmart and went to work for Price Club, before leaving and starting the Warehouse Club. He was later on the board of directors for Developers Diversified Realty Corporation. He was the President of the Metro Detroit Boys and Girls Club from 1974-1980.

Walter loved playing football, and later in life was an avid golfer. He loved to dance and was the life of the party. He was quick with a laugh and smile, and always had a story or a joke. He was great with children of all ages, and always had a piece of string in his pocket for one of his famous string tricks.

Walter was preceded in death by his father Cornelius Teninga, mother Emma (Huth) Teninga, sister Frances (Teninga) Olsen, brother Herman Teninga, and son Robert Teninga. He is Survived by his wife Nancy (Neumann) Teninga, daughter Laurie Vyselaar, grandchildren Ashley and Walter, and 4 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Ellie, Lillian, and Ethan, his sisters Ruth (Teninga) Anderson and Loraine (Teninga) Plasman.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach, 33 Gleason Street, Delray Beach, FL 33483.
