Werner "Moon"
Rother
July 16, 1934 – August 13, 2021
Werner "Moon" Rother died Friday, Aug. 13, at his home in Boynton Beach, in the company of his family. He was 87 years old.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., on July 16, 1934, Moon – his childhood nickname, from his round face, stayed with him – was the son of Alfred Rother and Herta (Simon) Rother, immigrants from Germany. The family moved to Boynton Beach in 1950 and Moon attended Palm Beach Gardens High School. He and the former Norma Sue Sellers eloped in 1955 after a whirlwind courtship, and had been married for 56 years when she died in 2011.
A carpenter by trade, Moon was an active member of Lodge #1770 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, in Delray Beach. He served as exalted ruler of the lodge in 1965-66. He was also a proud donor to the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla and recently helped send two
children from the neighborhood there for summer camp.
Moon is survived by his sister, Suzanne Dunlap of Boynton Beach; daughters Jayme Rother of Boynton Beach and Gwen Thomas (Scott) of Buffalo; and son Raymond of Boynton Beach. Another son, Paul, died in 2019, and a granddaughter, Mallory, died in 2020. Survivors also include eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a large network of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021 at Church of the Palms UCC, 1960 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach. Vaccinated guests are welcome without restrictions. If you are not fully vaccinated, please wear a mask at all times. And if you're feeling ill, please stay home – we know you'll be with us in spirit.
Contributions in Moon's memory may be made to the Florida Elks Youth Camp, Florida Elks Youth Camp - Home .
Moon's family would like to extend special thanks for the compassionate care provided by the Sunshine Team of Trustbridge Hospice.
