Obituary

William J. Egert passed away peacefully at Vitas Hospice in Delray Beach, Florida on August 16, 2021, from Covid-19 at the age of 93. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Kathleen (Kate) née Butler, his parents Margaret and William Egert, his sister Eileen Nolan, and his granddaughter Kathleen Logan Hook.

William (Bill) is lovingly remembered by his children: Eileen Logan, Mary (Keith) Claire, William (Constance) Egert, Jr., and James (Susan) Egert;  his grandchildren: Allison Logan McMahon, Keith (Kara) Claire, Jr., Laura Claire (Stephen) Bauer, Jessica Claire (Robert) Jacobellis, Jason (Corinne Perez) Claire, Alison(Danica Turner) Egert, William J. (Samantha McBride) Egert III, James Egert Jr. and  Brian (Marisa) Egert and 24 great-grandchildren. He was especially close to his son-in-law, Keith Claire, who followed him into the NYPD.

Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 21,1927.  He and Kate married on October 20, 1951 and they celebrated 67 years of wedded bliss until Kate's death in 2019. He loved spending his summers at the Great Sacandaga Lake in upstate NY and visiting Saratoga Racetrack with his loving wife and large extended family. He and Kate moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn in 1978 and then made Delray Beach, Florida their permanent home in 2012.

Bill worked for Bethlehem Steel from 1943 until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October of 1945. He served in Hawaii until he was discharged on July 26, 1946. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for 2 years until his discharge in October, 1052. In 1955, Bill became a member of the NYPD in 1955 and retired in 1983 after serving NYC for 28 years.

Bill was a talented painter who also loved to play golf and watch his favorite baseball team, the New York Mets. He tried to attend a spring training game every year with his family.

Bill was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas church while he lived in Brooklyn and St. Ann and St. Charles Borromeo Churches on Staten Island. When he and his wife moved to Delray Beach, they attended Emmanuel Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Staten Island, NY at an unspecified date.
