William Coburn McDonough, 90, of Delray Beach, FL went to be with his Lord Friday, December 28, 2018. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at TrustBridge Hospice in Bethesda Memorial Hospital. He was admitted there with pneumonia on Wednesday.
Bill (also called Coburn by his siblings, Mac by his long-time friends, and Dad or Gramps by those in the family) was born in Miami, FL to Samuel Dennis McDonough and Loretta Langhorst McDonough. He graduated from Miami Edison High School; after which he went directly into the newspaper business at the Miami Daily News. When he was 19, Bill met the love of his life, Mable Knight McDonough in Pompano Beach, FL to whom he has been happily married for almost 71 years. After working in the newspaper business 30 years for the Miami Daily News, the Delray Beach News Journal and the Fort Lauderdale News/Sun Sentinel, Bill and Mable bought the Bible Book Store in North Miami Beach from Bill's mom. They opened another store in Boca Raton and then in Delray Beach. They sold the business to Family Book Stores in 1994 and have been enjoying retirement since then. Family was the most important thing to Bill. He was well-loved and respected by all.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mable, and daughters Cathy (Skip) Commagere, Patti (Steve) Alexander, and Terri McDonough, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by siblings Dennis (Liz) McDonough, Ray (Lois) McDonough, and Lucy (Earl) Stewart. All were blessed by his kind encouraging words and his welcoming, loving spirit.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service for Bill at Cason United Methodist Church, 342 North Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, FL at 11:00 am on January 1, 2019. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.
