William E.
Trauth, Jr.
March 29, 1944 – November 17, 2023
William "Bill" Trauth, Jr., of Delray Beach, Florida, passed away in his sleep on November 17, 2023 at the age of 79. He was born in Manhattan, New York on March 29, 1944 to the late Lorna (Urquhart) Trauth and William E, Trauth, Sr. He is survived by his sister Wendy Trauth of Los Angeles, California.
Bill attended Leonia High School and earned a degree in mathematics at St. Lawrence University. He also earned a master's degree in computer science from the Stevens Institute of Technology. After his schooling, he was employed by Bell Labs, where he worked on leading-edge technology for missile defense systems.
Eventually, Bill made a career change and was hired by the Buckley School in New York City. He began his storied Buckley professional career in 1971 as head coach of varsity football, wrestling, and baseball. He quickly applied his razor-sharp acumen and brilliant intellect to the athletics program. In his 30 years of coaching, Buckley won 26 football championships, 23 wrestling championships, and 10 baseball championships. Further, from 1990 to 2001, the Buckley wrestling team earned 131 consecutive dual meet victories, which is still recognized by Wrestling USA as a national record for a junior high school level. These accolades, among others, earned him a feature in Faces in the Crowd in Sports Illustrated upon his retirement in 2003.
He was well respected by his many colleagues who worked with him. One is quoted as saying: "The loss of Bill Trauth leaves a void that cannot be filled. He was not just an excellent coach and a knowledgeable colleague, but a generous spirit and a mentor whose influence shaped countless lives. His legacy is a rich tapestry of resilience, excellence, and compassion." Bill cared most about instilling a strong work ethic and integrity in every student he coached.
During his summers, Bill spent his time at Wild Goose Camp on the shores of Great Moose Lake in Harmony, Maine. His parents had founded the camp in 1956 and it ran until closing in 1995 when it then became a retirement haven. After Bill Senior's passing in 1971, Bill Junior and his mom managed the camp. It became world renowned and a very special place for all campers and staff who had the privilege of being there for many summers. The camp provided unforgettable memories for so many.
Upon retirement, Bill enjoyed his time in Florida and maintaining the camp in Maine. He loved the game of golf and spent hours perfecting his swing and short game. His coaching skills and ability to identify flaws made him an incredible golf instructor. Many had the privilege of his efforts to improve their game.
Bill was an avid reader of politics and business news and a proficient researcher on the internet. He helped others in many ways and was a very giving person. He always reached out to help others and admired those who served their country. He enjoyed tinkering and fixing equipment at the camp and was a gifted engineer.
He loved a competitive game of Scrabble with friends in Delray or a poker game in the library at Wild Goose Camp. He always came up with a strategy to win.
Bill Trauth's journey through life was a beacon of inspiration, and his memory will continue to guide all of his dear friends. May he rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
A private family service will be held later.
